Product description
It all began with an auxiliary engine to be fitted to bicycles, the Cucciolo. This simple but effective “accessory” brought the Ducati name to the attention of the two-wheeled world. Today, we find that same name on the Desmosedici GP, a bike that has long dominated the blue ribbon category of motorcycle racing, MotoGP. Between these two extremes lies a range of production models featuring diverse technical and stylistic configurations, among which the desmodromic valve control system, designed by engineer Fabio Taglioni, stands out. Initially sophisticated technology exclusive to racing engines, the “desmo” system entered series production in the 1960s on the legendary single-cylinder, single-shaft engine. Then came the L-twin engines, the historic victory in the 200 Miglia di Imola, the Pantah series and finally the generational leap with the liquid-cooled four-valve L-twin: the Desmoquattro. This was another milestone that ushered in Ducati’s modern era, crammed with victories on the track with the phenomenal Desmosedici and on the market with now legendary products such as the Monster. This volume brings together and reviews the principalmodels that have contributed to the history of the Bologna-based manufacturer, dedicating specific pages to each one with background information, technical data and a rich array of illustrations.
