The Delta Group A is widely considered to be the greatest ever rally car. The 4WD, Integrale 8V, Integrale 16V and HF versions brought Lancia six consecutive World Constructors’ titles, from 1987 to ‘92, and four drivers’ title, two each for Miki Biasion and Juha Kankkunen, for a total of 46 victories in World Rally Championship events. Then of course, there is the untold number of victories in all the other championships contested on planet Earth, from Europe to the Middle East and through to the various international and national series. Nonetheless, a car, no matter how perfect, how up to date, how evolved, to win must be driven by the best drivers. The human factor is always capable of making a difference. Hence the idea of telling 20 stories of as many top drivers who have complemented the Delta and who here relive their “rally of a lifetime” – not necessarily a rally that ended in victory, let’s be clear – with the legendary all-wheel drive car that proved to be a nightmare for its rivals. The drivers featured are, in strictly alphabetical order, Andrea Aghini, Markku Alén, Didier Auriol, Miki Biasion, Dario Cerrato, “PG” Deila, Mikael Ericsson, Alex Fiorio, Piero Liatti, Piero Longhi, Yves Loubet, Tommi Mäkinen, Gilberto Pianezzola, Jorge Recalde, Bruno Saby, Carlos Sainz, Fabrizio Tabaton, Gustavo Trelles, Franz Wittmann and Juha Kankkunen.
